Ha! Das ist nicht nur ein Vorwurf, dass die unwissenschaftlich wären. Die Soziologie wollte selbst von der Wissenschaft weg.

Eine Wissenschaftlerin beschreibt, wie erstaunt und angewidert sie und viele andere waren, als die American Anthropological Association (AAA) zwar schleichend (weil sie das Mitgliedervotum vermeiden wollten), aber offiziell die Verweise auf Wissenschaft aus ihrer Selbstbeschreibung und Zielsetzung getilgt haben und durch so eine Art „allgemeines Verständnis vom Menschen” ersetzen wollten. Anthropology ist so eine Art Menschenkunde, die Soziologie und irgendwas weiteres umfasst.

Die haben sich ganz bewusst entschieden, mit Wissenschaft nichts mehr zu tun haben zu wollen und stattdessen in so eine Art Öffentlichkeitsgeschwafel einzusteigen, das keinen stören soll. Siehe vor allem die Änderungen dieser Satzung.

The message included a resolution from the SAS objecting to the AAA’s executive board’s attempt to remove science from the AAA’s stated purpose. It also included a pasted-in text showing the proposed changes. (You can see it all here.)

Interestingly, it isn’t just that the AAA leadership is ditching science. They’re also trying to position the AAA as being primarily about “public understanding” of humankind. As Stu Plattner, who served for many years as Cultural Anthropology Program Director for NSF, observed in email exchanges, this looks like “another step in the conversion of Anthropology from a social science into an esoteric branch of journalism.” Yeah, but the kind of journalism that is much more concerned with editorials than factual reporting.
